Project Description

Full Townhouse Reno in Mississauga

When we first walked into the Walden Circle townhouse, our senses were in overdrive. Not only was it not well-maintained, someone had clearly smoked in there for a long time and had not updated the space in years. We knew it was going to be a major project, but it was within our price range and would allow us to move into the area we wanted to be in.

Project List from Walden:

  • Replaced all flooring: Click-connect laminate throughout, tile in front entry, new tile in bathrooms, and paint/stair runner for the stairs.

  • Took out two walls to open up the kitchen: removed one structural and one non-structural wall to open space between kitchen and dining room.
  • New IKEA Kitchen, Granite Countertop and Appliances: customized an IKEA kitchen with off-white cabinets. Got a cookies and cream swirl countertop and new stainless steel appliances.
  • Barn Door on Main Floor: added accents throughout the house, but the most impressionable one was the custom barn door in the main kitchen area.

  • New Bathroom with Double Vanity: Made the one bathroom upstairs more like a master suite by converting the sink to a double and using a sleek sink-topped vanity.
  • Neutral colour palette with pops of blue: to keep things budget friendly, we chose a consistent colour throughout, just adding pops here and there to make an impact. We did have to professionally get the entire house sprayed with heavy primer to block the smoking toxins. This is after we washed to walls to get rid of the nicotine.

  • Replaced all trim and doors: One of the biggest downsides of buying a home someone previously smoked in is you have to get rid of a lot of the expensive trim and doors to get rid of the smell and toxins.

As you can see, we had A LOT of work to do. This time we luckily were not under the pressure of a new baby on the way (although little did we know, one was on the way when we moved in). We tackled most of the work in the first 2-4 weeks – getting all of the major areas in each room done. It would then take over a year to fully finish the house (and living with a hole in our ceiling way longer than we should have). Check out the gallery below to see what we did with the space.
