Detached Home Reno in Port Credit

It was a snowy day in January when this house came on the market. No pictures provided, which is usually great for us. Upon walking in, we could immediately see the potential. A fully detached home on Mississauga Road, just steps from the lake and Port Credit, we knew this was an opportunity we had to jump on — and we did! After a year and a half of many weekends spent on upgrading the house piece by piece, we were able to sell it for over $400,000 more than we bought it!

Project List:

  • Replaced all flooring: Click-connect laminate throughout the main floor, vinyl flooring upstairs and downstairs, tile throughout the bathrooms
  • Removed Two Walls: removed one structural wall between the living room & kitchen and one non-structural wall between the kitchen and old dining room
  • New IKEA Kitchen, Quartz Countertop and Appliances: use the IKEA kitchen planner to design a new kitchen layout using all white cupboards. Quartz calacatta countertops were installed once assembled and new stainless steel appliances.
  • Flipped the Layout to Create an Entertainer’s Kitchen: with the walls removed, we put the kitchen in the old dining room/kitchen space so it was directly beside the living room, and then moved the dining room to the far side of the old kitchen. This allowed us to build a giant island to create separation between the rooms but still have them all connected.
  • Created a Primary Bedroom Ensuite from an Extra Bedroom: Opted to create a primary bedroom suite with a full bathroom. We took an adjacent small bedroom and had it converted into a washroom, removed a linen closet and bumped it out to make a bigger walk-in closet, then added a door in the hallway to create a full suite experience.
  • Neutral bright colour palette with pops of dark accents: we painted the walls a very light white/grey and then accented certain walls with deep blues and greens. We also let the kids accent their rooms with their favourite colours.
  • Created larger spaces using open shelving: in both the bathrooms and kitchen, we opted for less closed in cupboards (knowing we had a lot of closed storage in other spaces) and using open shelving were able to maximize the space in the rooms.
  • Painted the Exterior & Built Custom Planter Boxes: Once the interior was complete, the exterior needed some modernizing to match. We sprayed the brick using an exterior paint, we hand-painted the vinyl siding using Sherwin-Williams vinyl-approved paint colours (to avoid warping) and we built planter boxes to create some warmer wood accents. Using a dark colour all over, we were able to freshen up dated items like the garage door & front door without costly replacements.

  • Finished the Basement & Designed a Laundry Room: before the basement was just storage, but had the rough framing already there. We had to start from scratch with vapour barrier, drywall, lights, flooring — everything! This easily added an extra 500 square feet of living space and allowed for a finished laundry room.

This house was a labour of love for 18 months and during our time there we expanded our family and welcomed our daughter Cali. As we grew as a family, we were able to adapt the space and help it grow with us – finishing the basement, moving the boys into bunk beds, creating a play space outside…It’s important to design a house in a way where it can adapt and be multi-functional as your life changes.  That’s why we use a lot of products that can be adapted, moved and changed vs. custom built-in units.
